Question: How do I turn off the protection in Word 2007 on a document that was protected in Word 2003?
Answer: On the Review Tab, click Protect Document. Then click Restrict Formatting and Editing, not Restrict Permissions. That is for Information Rights Management (IRM) and is a different form of document protection. The button Stop Protection can then be click, a password may be required.
