Question:  How do you copy a Theme from one computer to another in Word 2007?

 

Answer: 

The main Theme file that combines the Theme Colours, Fonts and Effects into one file uses the file extension .thmx

The relevant file (myTheme.thmx) needs to be copied from and then to the relevant directory on the new machine:

  • In Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003
    C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7 
    C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\

    But using just this file the Theme can only be used as a whole, and not separated into Fonts and Colours. To do this the relevant .xml files need to be copied as well:

  • In Windows XP and in Windows Server 2003
    C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Colors\
    C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Fonts\
    C:\Documents and Settings\ user name \Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Effects\      (if it exists)
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7 
    C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Colors\
    C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Fonts\
    C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes\Theme Effects\      (if it exists)

    • Warning: Care needs to be taken when copying these files, because the same file name is used for Colours, Fonts and Effects.
